Machar comes under fire after picking his wife as defense minister
(Thessherald)–The main opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar, has come under criticism after appointing his wife to the Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs, one of the top ministerial portfolios in the country.
The decision elicited mixed reactions from his supporters and the general public, with some accusing him of slipping into nepotism.
Duer Tut Duer, a prominent member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – IO, expressed dismay at the decision and criticized Machar and Angelina for running the political movement as a family organization, and at worst, taking the lion’s share of the unity government.
“SPLM-IO is not a family business for the two to have more than a lion share, but a mass based nationwide armed movement with well-informed conscious, committed and qualified membership,” said Duer Tut Duer, SPLM-IO former Sobat state governor and senior member of the SPLM-IO National Liberation Council (NLC).
“Dr. Riek Machar, First Vice President, Chairman of SPLM-IO and Commander in chief of SPLA-IO and his Wife, Angelina, Minister of Defense and Chairperson of SPLM-IO Defense Committee,” he challenged.
The senior official asked the opposition leader to rescind his decision to avoid conflicts of interest and political wrangling within the movement.
“To avoid internal differences within the Movement, Dr. Riek must request president Salva to revoke the appointment of Angelina or he (dr. Riek), must (resign), step down from the Chairmanship of the SPLM-IO.”
Luk Kang, a Facebook user and member of the SPLM-IO said: “Let us not start conflict within our Movement because of positions or because we dislike someone appionted. It’s their turn and our turn will come, as there is always next time. Madam Angelina is a Leader in her own right and deserves to serves South Sudan in any capacity. For those who are disappointed, please wait for your Leadership to make things right. It’s Dr. Riek Machar Leadership and has the right to appoint whoever’s to work with. We never know how fare they will be on those positions. They can be reshuffle
if they don’t preform. You may be the one to be appointed next time, would you like to be dislike when you are appointed? I don’t think so.”
