NAS kidnaps SPLA-IO officers in Kajo Keji

May 14, 2020 (Thessherald)–The National Salvation Front (NAS), a militant group fighting against both the government and the opposition has ambushed a vehicle ferrying SPLA-IO officers and kidnapped around 8 people, including senior commanders, according to Col. Lam Paul Gabriel, SPLA-IO Deputy Military Spokesperson.

“On 10/05/2020 at about 3:00PM a vehicle transporting SPLA-IO officers to the Sector 8 HQ in Wunulyet was ambushed by NAS forces at Kansuk in Kajo Keji County. About eight (8) SPLA-IO including three senior Officers were abducted by the attackers.”

The militant group, a Non-signatory to the peace deal, has been wagging an armed rebellion in South Sudan’s Central and Western Equatoria region since 2018.

SPLM/A-IO urged the NAS leadership to immediately release the detained officers and hand them over to the International Committee of the Red Cross, a neutral organization mandated to facilitate the release of detainees in line with the Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities, Protection of Civilians, and Humanitarian Access.

“The SPLA-IO calls upon NAS leadership to release those officers to a neutral body as soon as possible.”

The Senior officers include:

  1. Brig. Gen. Sammy Logeleng
  2. Brig. Gen. Clement Samuel
  3. Col. Wokil Peter.

The main armed opposition group called upon peace monitors to probe into the incident and hold those responsible to account.

“The SPLA-IO calls upon CTSAMM and UNMISS to investigate this violation and brings those responsible to account.”
