Duty Intelligence Officer killed by gangsters in Juba – family

Oct 7, 2020 (Thessherald)–A duty officer working under the Directorate of Military Intelligence has been killed while trying to rescue a family attacked by unidentified gangsters in the capital, Juba.

According to an immediate family member, the victim identified as John Desi was killed shortly after receiving calls from a family that was under attack in the middle of the night.

“I regret to announce to the public the death of our beloved nephew John Desi from Jur of Mvolo from Kedelo clan where Maj Gen Korkon Yapete came from,” said Meer Ba Gol. “John Desi was an iconic and professional soldier working in the Military Intelligence unit, Juba.”

“Last night, there was a group of robbers or gangs that entered and broke into someone’s house. As they were called to go to rescue the family that had been attacked – they took a military van and before reaching the scene, they suddenly fell into an ambush in the Jebel market and began exchanging fire with the gang members,” said the family member.

South Sudan’s capital Juba, despite the ongoing peace agreement, remains a hotbed of crimes.

In August, the United States released a travel advisory, warning its citizens against traveling to South Sudan.

“Violent crime, such as carjacking, shootings, ambushes, assaults, robberies, and kidnappings is common throughout South Sudan, including Juba. Foreign nationals have been the victims of rape, sexual assault, armed robberies, and other violent crimes,” it stated.
