Dr. Luka appointed as the Dean of the Africa Center for Strategic Studies
October 30, 2020 (Thessherald)–The former Director of Center for Peace Studies at the University of Juba, Dr. Luka Biong Deng, has been appointed as the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs of the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at the US National Defense University in Washington.
In a brief statement on social media on Thursday, the South Sudanese scholar praised the United States for its commitment to giving equal opportunities to everyone from all walks of life without discrimination.
“I am humbled by my appointment as the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs of the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at the US National Defense University in Washington,” said Dr. Luka Biong Deng.
Adding that, “Since I joined the Center as Adjunct Professor in 2016 and later on as Professor of Practice in 2017, I have been enjoying the best of my academic freedom and conducive work environment.”
“I am so grateful to the leadership of the Center and the University for allowing me to ascend to this top academic leadership position and to benefit from the “Greatness of America” of valuing people based on their merits.”
Biong has been a Professor at Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS) at US National Defense University in Washington and a faculty lead of two academic programs: National Security Strategy Development in Africa and Managing Security Resources in Africa.
He was also Associate Professor of Economics at University of Juba, South Sudan, a Global Fellow at Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), and a fellow at Rift Valley Institute. He was a resident fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, former Director of Center for Peace and Development Studies at University of Juba and academic staff at University of Gezira, in Sudan.
Biong was a former Minister of Cabinet Affairs from 2010-2011 during the Sudanese unity government.
