November 19, 2020 (Thessherald)–The Minister of Information, Michel Makuei Lueth, has denied alleged reports that the opposition leader and the Vice-President, Dr. Riek Machar is being banned from touring the countryside and the region.

“As to where these people got their information is up to them. He has not been restricted,” Michael Makuei stated.

Makuei explained that if Dr. Machar was locked up in his residence in the capital, Juba – as has been speculated on social media – he would not be in the office discharging official duties.

“If he was under arrest or restricted, why should he be performing the official duties? These are stories concocted by sycophants that do not want peace for South Sudan.”

The head of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s liaison office, Amb. Tesfaye Negassa, has called on regional leaders to release opposition leader and Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar from ‘house confinement’ and allow him to move freely in the region.

Earlier this week, the head of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s liaison office, Amb. Tesfaye Negassa, called on regional leaders to release Machar from house confinement.

“As you know his Excellency the First Vice President of this country is holding a very high office, and by virtue of that, he has all the privileges to move around. It is our belief,” said Amb. Tesfaye Negassa in a statement on Monday.

Amb. Tesfaye underlined that it is of the utmost importance for Machar to enjoy freedom of movement in light of the fact that he occupies a high position in the unity government.
