(Thessherald)–The Canadian government on Saturday welcomed the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity in South Sudan, while stressing the importance of peace in the country.

“Canada welcomes the announcement of a Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity in South Sudan. The establishment of an inclusive government is an important step toward national reconciliation and sustainable peace in South Sudan, paving the way for democratic elections, respect for human rights, as well as economic and social development.”

In its statement, the Canadian government commended President Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar for reaching a consensus on the outstanding issues.

“We recognize the important compromises taken by President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar in this process and hope this marks a step towards peace for the people of South Sudan.”

While the diplomatic office stressed the importance of women’s empowerment in the unity government, it expressed concern about the small number of women chosen by the parties.

“Canada commends the efforts made to empower women, as demonstrated by their greater representation in the new government, even if the numbers fall short of the requirements of the 2018 peace agreement.”

Canada reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the people of South Sudan and strengthening the country’s military capabilities and peacebuilding efforts.

“Canada is a committed partner of the people of South Sudan, providing our support through development, humanitarian and peacebuilding assistance, including our military contribution to the UN peacekeeping operation in the country.
