July 8, 2020 (Thessherald)–As the formation of local governments draws near, the FVP, and the Dr. Riek Machar convenes a consultative meeting, briefing representatives of 10 states on governance structure.
“The First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO), Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, for the last two weeks has been briefing and consulting with hundreds of representatives from the 10 States of South Sudan as formations of States executive and legislative organs are expected soon,” said the office of the FVP.
“The intensive and extensive consultative meetings with each State representatives outlined how such formations will look like, as well as the need to select competent cadres to the executive and legislative positions at State and County levels. These include States ministerial positions, States legislative Assembly membership, County Commissioners and County Councillors, and City Mayors, ETC,” said James Gatdet Dak.
Machar urges officials to allocate 35% to women as set out in the peace agreement, that women should be equally represented at all levels of government.
“He also reminded them to be respecting the 35% of the positions for females, as well as balancing constituencies. The discussions also centered on which cadres should be chairing the Party at State and County levels in all the 10 states.”
“The Chairman also emphasized the need of different Parties in R-ARCSS, that make up the unity or coalition government to cooperate in a multi party system in working for the good of the people.”
“Eight States have conducted their separate respective consultations with the Chairman for the last two weeks, which ended yesterday, Tuesday, 7 July, 2020, except for Upper Nile and Jonglei States because their respective governors are not yet appointed.
The Parties are yet to complete negotiations on which State ministry goes to which party, as well as allocations of the Counties through out the country.”
