SSUF dismissed from SSOMA on suspicion of colluding with ITGNU

The South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance suspends SSUF membership | Thessherald

The South Sudan United Front (SSUF) has been dismissed from the opposition alliance, SSOMA, on suspicion of colluding with the Kiir administration.

“During its extraordinary meeting on 11th March, 2021, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance Movements Leadership Council (SSOMA-LC) unanimously decided to terminate the membership of the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) from SSOMA with immediate effect,” the opposition alliance said in a statement.

This is not the first time the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance has suspended SSUF membership.

Last year, the SSOMA terminated the SSUF membership, accusing Malong and his group of having contact with the government.

“On the 25th September, 2020, SSOMA-Leadership Council suspended the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A), for the breach of SSOMA’s Terms of Reference (ToR) Article 4.9, that guides the conduct of SSOMA Leadership Council.”

“Furthermore, the SSOMA-Leadership Council in its meeting of 24th October, 2020 resolved to set up an investigation committee to investigate the suspension of SSUF/A from SSOMA.

The investigation committee submitted its findings on 15th February, 2021 and concluded on the following:

• The SSUF/A was found to have established tracks of negotiations that are parallel to that of SSOMA, both directly with the Government of South Sudan and the Community of Sant’Egidio;

• There is a heavy infiltration of SSUF/A senior leadership ranks by the government and security organs in Juba. Hence, SSUF/A senior officials are heavily compromised;

• The South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) has no common agenda with the other SSOMA member organizations in the Alliance of addressing the root causes of the conflict in South Sudan;

• The SSUF/A was plotting to take the leadership of SSOMA and use it to enhance its negotiating position with the government to finalize its disgraceful return to the bosom of Kiir’s regime.

“The Leadership Council of SSOMA as an alliance that is struggling for establishment of democratic federal republic in South Sudan based on new political, social and economic dispensation and as the vanguard of the people, decided to terminate the membership of SSUF/A with immediate effect date of 11th March, 2021.”

The South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA), is an umbrella of political factions that are not part of R-ARCSS.

Rome talks between the government and the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance hosted by the Community of Sant’Egidio have been postponed indefinitely due to what the government described as a “last-minute” change.

“As you may be aware, the Delegation of (R-TGONU) was scheduled to depart today for Rome via Addis Ababa to participate in peace negotiations under your kind auspices, with the (SSUF/A) & Real SPLM components of (SSOMA),” said Nhial Deng Nhial, in a letter addressed to Paolo Impagliazzo, Secretary-General of the St. Egidio Community.

“I regret to inform you that this will no longer be possible due to last minute developments that are totally beyond our control. I am accordingly requesting postponement of the Talks till further notice.”

“We shall of course endeavor to propose a new date for the Talks as soon as the circumstances prompting our request for the postponement have abated. Accept Excellency the assurances of my highest personal regard and consideration.”

South Sudan’s government and the coalition of holdout groups have engaged in peace talks under the auspices of the St. Egidio Community in Rome. However, the parties disagree on some points each time they are close to finalizing a deal.

Nov 10, 2020 (Thessherald)–Members of the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) are scheduled to be integrated into the CTSAMVM upon completion of an ongoing workshop in Rome, Italy.

“His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed that peace must be inclusive of SSOMA and that it is time to make enduring peace and political stability to the people of South Sudan. The workshop will finish on the 13th November 2020,” said a participant on Monday.

Last month, the opposition coalition and government delegation met in Italy for peace talks aimed at bringing the Non-signatory group to the negotiating table and joining the peace process.

However, the talks ended without any agreement as the parties failed to agree on the demands laid out by the South Sudan Movements Alliance – a coalition group comprising of holdout groups.

October 10, 2020 (Thessherald)–The leadership of the South Sudan United Front/Army headed by Paul Malong Awan has reportedly surrounded to Kiir’s delegation in Rome, according to a reliable source at the peace talks.

“Malong surrendered to the government delegation in Rome as he demanded the sacking of the NSS boss as one of his conditions to return to Juba,” the source revealed.

“South Sudan United Front/Army rebels group have surrendered voluntarily to the South Sudanese government delegation in Rome after their Chairman Gen. Paul Malong Awan was booted out of the SSOMA alliance’s first meeting with the government yesterday in Italy,” the source disclosed.

According to another official at the peace talks, Malong and his entourage are negotiating separately with the government delegation in an effort to reach an agreement later today.

The South Sudan United Front/Army – a holdout group has been facing an internal row after the dismissal of its former spokesman, Emmanuel Sunday de John.

Last month, the South Sudan Movements Alliance suspended SSUF/A from the opposition alliance over a breach of communications.
